Bronchitis is a respiratory disease in which the bronchi, or the branches of the trachea, get inflamed due to several reasons. The inflammation of the bronchi is caused due to bacterial infections by Pneumococcus or Mycoplasma; or viral infections by rhinovirus or Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), etc. Constant exposure to industrial, cigarette or tobacco smoke can cause bronchitis. On the other hand, a person suffering from asthma has a higher risk of contracting bronchitis. Coughing up yellow or green phlegm, chest pain and shortness of breath are the symptoms of bronchitis. It is very essential to treat acute bronchitis as early as possible to prevent it from being chronic.

Water

Turmeric
Turmeric is one of the most widely used home remedy for treating all kinds of cough, like the cough produced from common cold, flu or even bronchial cough. Just add half a teaspoon of turmeric to one glass of hot or lukewarm milk and drink it once everyday. It is very effective if taken just before going to bed.

Tea
Tea is also one of the best age-old home remedy for treating cough and mucus. You can just add ΒΌ teaspoon chopped ginger while preparing your tea. This is a popular form of tea consumed in India and other Asian countries. Another way, you can add garlic and honey to your lemon tea and have this concoction 2-3 times a day. Honey and lemon also possess several medicinal values and are useful in treating the infections of respiratory system.

Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil is very effective in treating cough and bronchitis as it helps in loosening of the phlegm. Drops of eucalyptus oil can be poured onto a clean cloth and inhaled at regular intervals all day long. Another way, you can add eucalyptus oil to boiling water and inhale the vapors to get rid of the mucus producing cough.

Apart from these remedies, epsom salt baths, yoga and outdoor exercises help in preventing bronchitis. Fenugreek and basil are also effective herbs for bronchitis. Supplements of vitamin C and vitamin A are also helpful in preventing and treating bronchitis. It is recommended to consult the doctor before taking any of these remedies.
