Gaining weight is equally difficult as compared to losing weight. Here are some high calorie foods for weight gain, if you want to build a few muscles and look fit.
We often come across diets and lists of food which are advised by dietitians to help people lose weight. However, there are a number of people who are underweight for their age due to some biological reasons. There are various drawbacks about being thin and underweight such as a fragile bone structure, weaker metabolism and immune system and other deficiencies. Even though gaining weight is not a solution to any of the above mentioned health problems, it does help to minimize the chances of increasing these problems. If your weight is not in accordance with your age and height, you can surely consider increasing your diet and including a few high calorie foods in it. Protein rich foods are very high in calorie content, so every time you consume them, you should make sure there is some physical activity to digest it. This is because overeating of proteins without exercise may lead to unhealthy cholesterol.
  • Foods such as egg, beef, pork, lamb and tuna are higher in calories than chicken and other lighter sea foods and fish. Therefore, consuming these healthy high calorie foods at least once a day for about 2 weeks, will surely add some extra calories to your body.
  • Eating lentils and beans, which are also very rich in proteins can, not only increase your calorie intake but also help you with the nutrients. Thus, soups which include these foods, and meat stocks can prove to be a healthy calorie intake for those looking to gain weight.
  • There are other protein sources such as dairy products which can be helpful, when consumed as snacks throughout the day. Foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, buttermilk, etc., are great choices for midday snacks with fruits and crackers.
Fatty Foods are the Richest
  • Even though fatty foods are a big NO for those who are overweight or obese, it can be consumed in certain amounts by individuals who want to gain weight effectively.
  • There are many high calorie foods, which are segregated as good and bad fatty foods. Those which belong to the good fatty foods don't harm the health very much and provide the body with good cholesterol. On the other hand, the foods that are rich in bad fats shoot up the cholesterol levels with the smallest amounts and thus, these should be regulated.
  • Fatty foods like salmon, mackerel, sardines, poultry, low fat milk, butter, egg yolks, oils (pressed from olives, linseed, walnut, almonds, safflower, and sesame) and various nuts (cashew nuts, pumpkin seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, etc.) are a few examples which are healthy and highly caloric in nature.
  • However vegetable oils, and meat skins or beef, pork, lamb or chicken should not be consumed as they are extremely fatty and can lead to deposition of fat, which is not metabolized by the body. Thus, every time you consume these high calorie foods for weight gain, make sure you monitor your total calorie intake and exercise regularly so the foods are used up by the body for weight gain.
Carbohydrates are Calorie Dense
  • Carbohydrates are also known to be high calorie foods to gain weight, but they are very useful for those who have weaker metabolism, since sugars are the best sources of energy. Therefore, the basic use of any carbohydrate food that you eat will be used for production of energy and the remaining will be used for the production of tissue or muscle.
  • Whole grains, sweet potatoes and yams, beans, cereals, rice, and fruits such as apples, bananas and oranges are very rich in carbohydrates. You can have 1 serving of whole grain pastas, a meat sandwich made from 2 slices of whole grain bread, 1 serving of brown rice (not polished rice), bran muffins, oatmeal, whole milk, chocolate, etc., for more than a month.
  • These are starchy and high carb foods which are very useful in increasing daily calorie content. Fruits are high in carbs than vegetables, thus, make sure you use a few high calorie food combinations in order to balance your consumption well.
