Glucose is the primary source of energy for our body. The food that we eat is broken down into glucose by the process of metabolism. There can be several medical conditions that can result in hyperglycemia, when excessive amount of glucose circulates in the blood. High blood glucose levels can cause several serious complications like kidney damage, cardiovascular damage, neurological disorders, etc.
Causes of Hypoglycemia
There can be several causes for glucose levels to rise beyond normal. Here are some of them.
Diet plays an important part in managing the glucose levels. The carbohydrates that we consume are broken down into simpler compounds and ultimately glucose. Insulin produced in the body, helps the glucose to move into the muscle cells from the blood stream. If you include too many carbohydrates in you daily diet, the insulin will find it difficult to handle the glucose produced, and the excess glucose will remain in the blood stream, thus increasing the blood glucose levels. Hence it is very important to check the count of carbohydrates if you have high glucose levels in blood.
When you exercise, the body uses up the extra glucose that is stored in the cells, to provide energy. This keeps the glucose level in check and there is no accumulation of sugar in the blood plasma. However, inactive lifestyles can result in increased levels of sugar in the blood. Hence it is very important to exercise regularly to avoid high glucose in blood.
When the stress level of the body goes up, it automatically sends a signal to the brain that initiates the fight or flight response. This results in increased production of hormones which ultimately causes increases level of blood glucose, in its effort to produce more energy for the body to fight stress.
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common high glucose causes. People with diabetes type 1 have low levels of insulin which prevents the body from converting all the blood glucose into glycogen. In diabetes type 2, the insulin is present in normals levels but does not work efficiently, causing blood sugar levels to rise. Gestational diabetes can also be one of the causes for high glucose during pregnancy.
