Teeth whitening, also known as dental bleaching is a part of cosmetic dentistry, where oxidizing or bleaching agents are used to make your teeth sparkling white. No need to mention that sparkling white teeth can give you a truly beautiful smile. However, professional teeth whitening is not the only option available for whitening your teeth. Teeth whitening can also be done at home with some simple household items.
Cost of Teeth Whitening
The cost of teeth whitening depends whether you go for the professional teeth whitening, home teeth whitening or natural teeth whitening. The cost of professional teeth whitening can again differ from one location to another. But in general, cost can be somewhere between $300 to $800, depending on the methods employed for this purpose.
There are several teeth whitening methods, out of which bleaching strips, bleaching gel, bleaching pen, laser bleaching and natural bleaching are worth mentioning. Out of these, whitening strips and trays with whitening gel are less expensive, while laser bleaching is the most expensive procedure.
Using Baking Soda
Baking soda is basically sodium bicarbonate that can remove tough stains and plaques from the enamel of the teeth to whiten them. Apart from these, baking soda can destroy bacteria inside the mouth to prevent gum diseases and eliminate bad breath.
Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is renowned for its strong oxidizing and bleaching properties, and together with baking soda, it can do wonders for stained and discolored teeth. For this remedy, you have to buy 2-3% hydrogen peroxide solution available for home use. Now, mix a small amount of it with baking soda to make a thick paste. Use this paste as a toothpaste to brush your teeth as usual, but be sure to not swallow it. After brushing, rinse your mouth properly with clean water.
Baking Soda and Salt
Mix about 3 teaspoons of baking soda with one teaspoon of table salt and then gently apply the mixture on your teeth. This homemade tooth powder can help you to get rid of stains from your teeth.
Baking Soda and Strawberry
Baking soda can also be mixed with strawberry to get desired results. For this, you have to crush a strawberry completely and then add some baking soda to it. Mix both the ingredients thoroughly to get a smooth paste. Now apply this paste to your teeth and leave it for about five minutes, after which rinse it off completely. You can use this homemade teeth whitener once in a day for about 1 week. This homemade teeth whitener is considered by many as the best way to whiten your teeth naturally, as not only baking soda, but even strawberry is a natural teeth whitener.
Baking Soda, Glycerin and Peppermint Extract
Yet another homemade teeth whitener can be made by mixing baking soda with glycerin and peppermint oil or extract. First take 5 teaspoons of baking soda and then add about 3 to 4 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin to it. Mix both the ingredients properly to get a fine paste, to which you can add a few drops of peppermint oil and half spoon table salt. After mixing all the ingredients properly, you can use it as a homemade toothpaste.
Overuse of baking soda for teeth whitening is not good, as its excessive use can corrode the teeth. So, baking soda should be used only in moderation to avoid problems like sensitivity of the teeth and erosion of the enamel of the teeth. These are the common problems that one can encounter with frequent teeth whitening, be it professional teeth whitening or natural teeth whitening.
