Swollen throat, also known as sore throat or strep throat, is very common during flu season. When the pharynx, the back of your throat, is inflamed, the signs and pain presents itself. Typically when someone has a cold and flu or an attack of influenza, he/she will suffer from a sore throat. But before we go any further, let me just clear the concept of strep throat. Although it is a commonly used term, strep throat is nothing but an infection of the pharynx. So when we discuss the remedies, don't mistake them for strep throat remedies.
Swollen sore throat or throat glands can be caused due to several reasons. As we discussed that cold, flu, and influenza are very common causes, there are other factors that can make things worse. Allergies from dust, pollution, or mold are also major reasons. Besides that, even infection on the back of the throat, sinus drainage, viral or sinus infection, bronchitis, smoking, tonsillitis, or pharyngitis could also trigger it. Often times, a swollen throat can also signal health issues such as glandular fever, tuberculosis, or an HIV infection (only your doctor can verify that). But before you start to self-diagnose and think the worst, visit your doctor and get all your doubts cleared.
Remedies for Swollen Throat Glands
Dry, swollen, and itchy throat glands are definitely not comfortable. On top of that, eating and drinking anything can really be painful as well. Till the time you can visit your doctor and find some relief from the pain, maybe these home remedies can give you some ease. Swollen throat can be quite uncomfortable and frustrating at the same time.
In order to treat a swollen or sore throat, take a glass of boiled water to mix 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder, 1 teaspoon honey, and a pinch of black pepper. Drink this mixture immediately. You can also eat 3 drops of cinnamon oil and 1 teaspoon of honey to get relief.
If you feel that you or someone you know has tonsillitis, there's a home remedy you can try. In a glass, add boiled milk, ½ teaspoon turmeric powder and ground black pepper. Drink it 3 nights in a week and get relief.
For sore throat and swollen glands, in a cup of boiled water, add 2 tablespoons of grated ginger. Let it steep for about 5 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon of honey as well and drink it at least 3 times a day.
One of the best remedies is to gargle 2 to 3 times a day with salt water. In a cup of warm water, add 1 teaspoon salt and gargle properly. But make sure you don't overdo it as it can make your throat tissues dry.
If you are experiencing pain while swallowing, have hot drinks such as ginger and/or herbal teas and chicken soup. Instead of drinking cold water and aerated drinks, these alternatives can soothe your throat (dryness, itchiness, and swelling).
As you can see, these swollen throat remedies are prepared using household ingredients easily found in your pantry and refrigerator. These remedies can help ease or reduce the pain considerably in a matter of day of two. However, if the pain and these remedies do not work even after 48 hours, it could be a sign of a serious illness. So make sure you visit your doctor as soon as possible and get a thorough diagnosis.
