Chapter 31: Secrets Are Made To Be Told

I lay in bed and stared at the ceiling. It was New Year's Eve and I had been partially cooped in my bed since Christmas, watching Charmed, and Law and Order. It was a never-ending thing for me and it all felt normal. Why couldn't I just live in my bed? Is that illegal or something?

Interrupting my thoughts was my door coming open and Ian appearing. "I leave you for two days and you're still in the same place. I'm kind of sorry I left you."

I smiled and sighed. "I don't want to get up and do anything. I'd rather spend my new year like this. It would kind of be amazing if you ask me."

"Yeah, but I don't think that regular people do that Briana," he said as he plopped down right beside me, making the bed rise on my side.

"Well, I don't remember being born regular. I was premature, remember? Regular people aren't."

"Okay, okay," he said laughing as he lay his head on my chest. "You got me there." I laughed as he got comfortable.

We lay in silence for a while and I couldn't help but look down at Ian. He had his eyes closed. He was just lying there peacefully. "Ian?"

"Shhh. Don't ruin it..."

"Ruin wha-"

"SHHHH." I shut my mouth and waited for him to speak. "Your heartbeat.."

"What about it?"

He looked up at me and smiled. "It beats the same as mine."

"Really?" He nodded. "Lemme see." He laughed as he laid back and I laid on his chest. His heart was going at a slow pace and when I placed my hand over mine, I realized that they were beating at the same time. "That's so amazing." I sat up and looked at him.

"That means we're in love," he said laughing.

I looked at him and sighed. "Ian don't joke around like that, okay?" I crawled out of bed and stood up. He raised an eyebrow and then stared at me so confused.

"Why? Briana I was kidding."

"I know, but still."

"But still what?" I looked up and then around. "Is there something that you aren't telling me?"

"What makes you think that?" I half yelled. He raised an eyebrow.

"There is something you aren't telling me. The reason to why you aren't at all acting the way that you usually would."

"I've been acting normal. I just..."

"This has something to do with Kaleb, doesn't it?"

"Ian. Stop jumping to conclusions." He stopped speaking. "Nothing's wrong. Everything is just... It's the same as it was before."

"That's not what Liz told me." Realizing what he just said, he slapped a hand over his mouth.

"Excuse me?"

"Nothing," he said standing up. "Nothing. Let's just forget this conversation ever happened."

"No," I muttered. He paced his way toward the door and I made my way in front of it, blocking off his only exit way. "Now I have to know what Liz told you. This conversation can't just be dropped." He backed off some. "What did she tell you?" He fell silent. "Tell me what she said Ian. Tell me now."

"She told me that there was something more in your and Kaleb's friendship. I told her that she was wrong because you would have told me any and everything no matter what." I hesitated at the door. Ian's eyebrow raised. "So just tell me that she's wrong. Tell me that she's wrong Briana."

I fell limp at the door. All of my bones had turned to jelly. And as I looked back up at Ian, he knew what Liz had said was the truth. "I... I can't..." I looked down, unable to meet his eyes.

"And why can't you?" He asked.

"Briana," he said. He put his hand under my chin and forcefully lifted my face toward his.

"Ian," I said.

He removed his hand from under my chin and stepped back some. "I gotta go," he mumbled.

"Ian..." He pushed me out of the way and opened the door. Before leaving, he turned, gave me one last heartbreaking look and then slammed the door on his way out.

I made my way down to the ground and just sat there. No tears were coming out, nothing at all. I just sat there looking down. How did things change so fast? How did our friendship overturn just like that in a matter of seconds?

And how could Liz?

Fury shot through me as I stood up and made my way to the door. I pulled it back and walked two doors down. Without knocking, I opened the door and she was there doing her hair.

"Oh sleeping beauty is out of her cage," she said with sarcastic bliss.

"Don't give me that." I shut the door. "How the hell could you Liz?"

"How the hell could I... what Briana?" She turned away from the mirror and looked at me straight on.

"You told Ian about Kaleb and I. Why wou... You said..."

"Now chill out there sister," Liz said. "I only told him to notice how you act differently in front of Kaleb and he told me not to go down that road."

"That's the same thing Liz! It's exactly the same thing. It got Ian's brain working and now he knows."

"You told him?" She said hesitantly.

"How could I not?" I asked. "Your words had already set his brain in motion and he had to have already been thinking about it, and so he just brought it up, in the heat of the moment and there goes our friendship."

The tears had started to fall down at that moment. I couldn't help it anymore. I couldn't build the strength to hold them up anymore.

"Briana..." She clasped her hands. She stood up and made her way toward me. In a split second, she had her arms around me and in that same split second, I forgave her, because she was my sister. "Baby, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I just... I..."

I couldn't even make the words come out anymore. I just sat there crying. I mean, what else was I supposed to say? Or do for that matter? It seemed like I had just lost my best friend.

I make the best decisions it seems like.
