Cooking Turkey Legs

Cooking turkey legs is very easy if done with the appropriate techniques.
Celebration of thanksgiving is never complete without the scrumptious turkey recipes. There are many amateur chefs that are just very enthusiastic about cooking turkey and preparing the tempting turkey recipes. Well, there are a few things that can make the celebration food more easy and quick. Why not learn cooking turkey legs instead of the whole big turkey itself? Sounds interesting doesn't it? Cooking turkey legs and wings can be really exciting and easy at the same time. This can be done in an oven, on a grill, and even in a crock pot (slow cooking).

Recipe for Cooking Turkey Legs
Before learning how to cook turkey legs, it is essential to decide upon a turkey recipe that you will be preparing. You can make numerous turkey leg recipes, like turkey leg soup, smoked turkey legs, turkey legs with mushroom gravy and so on.

Ingredients
  • 4 turkey drumsticks
  • 2 large onions
  • 1 cup turkey or chicken broth
  • 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup of olive oil
  • Pepper and salt to taste
  • ½ cup red wine
  • ½ teaspoon each of dry thyme and dry rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon of dry oregano
Procedure
Wash the turkey drumsticks, pat them dry and set aside. Take a mixing bowl and add all-purpose flour, oregano and pepper (½ teaspoon) and salt (1 teaspoon) into it. Apply some of this mixture on the turkey drumsticks. Heat olive oil in a frying skillet and put the flour coated turkey legs in the heated olive oil, one leg at a time. Cook turkey legs until they turn brown in color. Make sure you keep turning the turkey leg, so that all the sides of the legs get cooked equally. When the legs are cooked, place them in a baking dish. Add chopped onion and minced garlic into the same frying pan and cook it until the onion becomes tender (for around 5 minutes).

After this, add turkey broth or chicken broth and red wine to the frying pan. Also add the herbs like bay leaf, rosemary and thyme to the mixture. Heat for only a few seconds and then place this mixture on the turkey legs that you earlier kept in the baking dish. Cook this recipe over 350ºF. Cooking time for turkey leg in this recipe is, more than two hours. Slow cooking always enhances the taste of the turkey legs and makes the recipe more tasty, juicy and moist too. Therefore, cooking turkey kegs in a crock pot is always better than in the oven.

Cooking Turkey Legs on the Grill
Ingredients
  • 4 turkey drumsticks
  • 1 cup of chili sauce
  • 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
  • ¼ cup of vegetable oil
  • ¼ chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon of dry thyme
  • 1 ½ tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon each of pepper and salt
Procedure
Take a small saucepan and mix minced garlic, chili sauce, vinegar, vegetable oil, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt and thyme into it. Simmer the mixture for about 20 minutes. Place the turkey legs on a roasting pan and pour this sauce over them. Cover with a plate and marinate the turkey legs for more than two hour, it's better to put it in the refrigerator. Turn the legs so that each side gets marinated. Before grilling turkey legs, spray the nonstick spray (when heat is off) and put the marinated turkey legs over the grill. Grill the marinated turkey legs for 7 minutes or so, per side. Or until the legs become brown in color. Cooking on the grill takes relatively lesser time than the oven and of course the slow cooker or crock pot.
