It was Friday midnight, when Melanie Walter received a call. Melanie was lying in bed, wrapped around in a cozy blanket, while the rain pattered against her bedroom window. Looking at the caller ID, she saw that it was her best friend, Lisa Weathers.
Hmm strange, Melanie pondered. Lisa was not the type of girl to call her so late, as she was usually sleeping by now. Moreover, Lisa despised phone conversations and she avoided it all costs. These two factors increased Melanie’s curiosity as she answered the call.
"I can’t do this anymore! I… I’m sorry, Mel," Lisa interrupted, her words tumbling out in a frenzied manner.
Melanie bolt upright, frowning in confusion and concern. "I don’t understand, what’s going on?"
"I’ve had enough. You always told me things will get better, but it keeps getting worse. You told me time will heal the pain, but it keeps hurting more every day. I’m sick of it. I’ve decided that I’m finally going to do it. I see no reason to live with this torture, so I’m putting an end to it."
"What? No!" Melanie exclaims, throwing her blanket to the floor and already jumping to her feet. "Lisa, I’m begging you, please don’t-!"
"Don’t come for me. Goodbye," Lisa replied flatly, as the line went dead.
Melanie stared at her phone in shock, as her friend’s words echoed in her mind. It was not the first time that Lisa scared her like this. She was always worried about her best friend, knowing that Lisa suffered from chronic depression for many years. Still, Melanie thought that Lisa had been getting better recently, so she was not prepared for this late-night phone call.
Wasting no time, Melanie grabbed her coat and keys, and she hurried out of her apartment and entered her car. The night-sky was black and starless, and the streetlights were illuminating everything with a dull-amber glow. Exceeding the speed limit, the world became a blur for Melanie, as she drove towards Lisa’s house.
Please, God, please let me find her in time, Melanie prayed internally. She refuses to lose her best friend.
