It’s Just Too Late - Chapter 13

Getting close to the end!
"Mom! Someone’s at the door!" Charlie yells from the living room, so I run in from the kitchen and fix my hair before swinging the door open. "Hey, you’re just in time. I just finished getting ready, and Charlie's ready to go too." I smile at Alex, who looks perfect in his dark suit.

Smiling at me, and leaning in to kiss me, Alex jumps back when Charlie comes running through the door. "Alex!" He grins, and Alex picks him up from so he can talk to him.

"What are you whispering about?" I ask, with a pout. I want to know what they're talking about!

"You'll know soon enough Mom!" Charlie smirks, and Alex sends him a warning look. "Well you two should get going." Charlie adds, and starts walking toward Julie's apartment. When did he get so grown up?

"Tell me!" I groan, as we wait for the waitress to come back with our drinks. It's still bothering me that him and Charlie were sharing secrets. "Please!"

Shaking his head, Alex glances up at me and takes my hand in his. "I can't tell you yet." He answers nervously. "Excuse me, ma'am, these are for you." The waitress smiles and hands me a vase of white lilies and roses.

"Me? Who are they from?" I ask, in confusion dreading that it may be from Ben and it will ruin our night. Picking up the card sitting in the flowers, the only words are, "Look up."

I look up in hesitation, to see Alex standing up and stepping around closer to me, and then kneeling in front of me. "Will you marry me?" Alex asks gruffly with an emotion filled voice, as he pulls a small black box out of his pocket. "I know it's fast, but I love you and Charlie so much, and I want to be with you for the rest of my life." He explains, and I feel a tear graze down my cheek.

"Alex, I- yes! I love you too!" I smile at him and in the blink of an eye Alex is standing up and lifting me into his arms. "I love you." I mutter as his lips press against mine, and we hear a few people clapping around us.

We pull apart, and sit back down with huge grins on our faces. "See why I couldn't tell you Charlie and I's secret? Aren't you glad we didn't tell you?" He asks, and takes my hand and draws circles on my palm with his thumb. Smiling at me, Alex pulls my hand up to his lips and places a kiss on my fingertips.

"I'm glad I didn't know." I admit sheepishly. "When did you talk to Charlie about it?" I ask curiously. I didn't think he and Charlie had hung out at all recently.

Shrugging, Alex answers, "When I came over to watch the movie with you guys, when I tucked him in. He said he thinks it'll be awesome once we're married. He's a great kid."

"He is pretty great." I smile back at him, "Oh, do you still want to go to that picnic thing tomorrow? I could really use you there with me." I mention, and take a sip of my wine. "I'll pick you and Charlie up at 11, or I could spend the night..."

Nodding at him with a seductive smile, I add, "Let's get out of here now." I mumble and we both stand up quickly, having lost our appetites.
