It's Royally Complicated - Chapter 11

"Every time I look at you, I have to catch my breath."

Shane studied the sketch I made of him. I bit my lip and felt my cheeks heat up with embarrassment. "It's not really that good. I haven't sketched in a few years and..." I trailed off when he shook his head and smiled. We were sitting in the maze, it seemed to be the safest place at that moment. Shane looked at me. "No, it's..." He laughed a little. "It's really good... Was all that running really necessary to hide this?" Shane asked. I felt my cheeks heat up more and looked away bashfully. Shane laughed and my heart raced at the gorgeous sound of his laughter. He cupped my cheek with his free hand and kissed me. I never got used to how quickly my body responded to his kiss. I felt limp and exhilarated all at once. I smiled when he broke the kiss then bit the edge of my bottom lip. "You can have it if you want," I mumbled shyly.

Shane suddenly stood up. I looked at him, puzzled. He raised a finger, gesturing for me to wait. I frowned with confusion. When he came back, he had his hand behind his back. I smiled. "What have you got there?" I asked when he sat next to me. He shook his head. "Nothing," he said. I laughed. "Oh, I'm sure it's something," I teased. Shane chuckled a little and revealed a perfect, single white arum lily. I immediately felt the smile drop from my lips as he presented it to me. I looked at it with astonishment. "I figured, if we were exchanging gifts I'd have to have something to exchange with," he said, smiling. I was still surprised even after I took the flower out of his hands. "How did you know?" I asked, referring to the flower. "I don't know if you've realized but I notice everything about you," he said in a low whisper as I stared down at the lily. "You do something to me, Rose." He removed some of my curls out of my eyes. The hair at the back of my neck rose when I felt his fingers grace my face. I still couldn't look at him.

"Every time I look at you, I have to catch my breath." My heart skipped a beat. I blinked and couldn't respond. I felt a lump in my throat and tears sting my eyes when I realized just how much I really cared for him. We could never be together, I realized. "I've got something else for you," Shane said. I took a breath and looked at him. His gorgeous features caused another sting in my heart. It hurt to look at him and know I couldn't have him. Shane reached behind his back again but didn't remove his eyes from mine. He brought forward his football souvenir. I stared at it as he handed it to me. When I raised my fingers to take it, they were trembling. Shane noticed. "What's wrong?" He asked. I stared at the ball again and couldn't stop the tears anymore. Shane instantly moved closer. "Oh, crap! I'm really sorry Rose," he said and wiped a tear from my cheek. I wiped my cheeks and sniffed. "No, I'm sorry," I said and sighed, staring at the grass. "I didn't mean to cry, I just..." I trailed off and shook my head. Shane lowered his head and forced himself into my view. I looked at him, his gray eyes were curiously searching mine like a child. I almost smiled. Would he ever stop being adorable?

I looked out at the town clock that peaked over the hedges of the maze as it ticked down the last few seconds before striking seven and started counting down with it. "Four, three, two." I closed my eyes just as the DONG sounded and echoed through the town. When I opened my eyes again, Shane was staring at me. I looked at him. We were both thinking the same thing; the day was now over, it was time to get ready for dinner and then he would have to leave. I dropped my eyes to the football and felt like crying again as the thought of being without him sunk in yet again. Shane's fingers graced my face again. I closed my eyes instinctively and felt my heart give a flutter. "Well, at least you gave me that hour," he said, his voice low. I looked at him. He smiled sadly then brought his lips to my forehead. I closed my eyes again at the feel of his lips, the pain hitting me again. I knew I would be crying myself to sleep that night...

First of All - Gosh! It feels so good to be able to write and post again. I hope you readers haven't given up on my story yet.

*Yvotte: Mark's story is only coming along in the next few chapters. His doesn't take up such a big part of the story but it's very necessary.
*Anne: Haha. They started out being the main characters but then I fell in love with the rest.
*Carly J: Glad you like it.
*Anna: I'm not planning on stopping yet, my dear.
