Leave Quietly

Preparing for a reluctant farewell.
Soon words will be written in stone,
As I prepare to sleep alone,
The battles won, the war still lost,
Tears and broken hearts the cost.

I look back now and see my life,
Mother, daughter, sister, and wife,
A caring friend, I've tried to be,
All in hopes, you'll remember me.

I gave my heart and soul to you,
I found at last, a love that's true,
The tragic truth, it came too late,
The cruel joke played by fate.

And so I say my last farewell,
What comes next, I cannot tell,
I pray it's not too long, you grieve,
As I turn out my light and leave quietly.
