Liver Cleansing Diet

The main function of the liver is to eliminate toxins and impurities from our body. A liver cleansing diet helps the liver to function optimally.
The liver is the largest gland in the human body and it is located at the right of the abdomen. The primary function of the liver is to eliminate waste products and toxins from our body, conversion of excess protein into urea and the production of bile. There can be a build up of toxins in the liver which reduces the liver's ability to get rid of waste due to which you may feel tired and sluggish. A liver cleansing diet will benefit people who suffer from poor digestion, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, low metabolism, skin diseases and irritable bowel syndrome by the process of detoxification.

In a liver cleansing diet, you need to strictly stir clear of refined and processed food. All kinds of deep-fried food as well as chips, cakes, pastries, pasta and cookies are to be avoided as these foods spike up your blood sugar level thereby burdening the liver. You also need to avoid dairy products as well as all kinds of seafood like mackerel, lobsters, crabs and mussels as they might contain high levels of mercury in them. Mercury, even in very small doses is toxic and is harmful for the body. Limit your intake of tea and coffee when you are undergoing a liver cleansing diet and also cut down on processed and prepackaged meats like sausages, bacon, hotdogs and salami. Avoid the consumption of alcohol and soft drinks when you are following a liver cleansing diet. You need to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and food which is high in omega 3 essential fatty acids like salmon, walnuts and pine nuts.

  • Fruits: Orange, lemon, cranberry, papaya, grapefruit, lime, mango
  • Vegetables: Broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, beets, artichoke, asparagus, onion, Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach
  • Herbs and Spices: Garlic, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, fennel, coriander, parsley, cayenne pepper
You also need to keep yourself hydrated when you are following a liver cleansing diet and drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. Eat whole grains and cook your meals in olive oil or canola oil. Eat lots of salads and soups and avoid salad dressings that contains sugar and trans fat.

Here are two recipes which will help you to cleanse your liver and get a healthy body.

Liver Cleansing Recipe # 1

  • 2 cups fresh grapefruit juice
  • ½ cup lime juice
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 2 inch fresh ginger
  • ½ teaspoon acidophilus
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons flax seed oil

Grate the ginger and squeeze out its juice. In a blender mix together distilled water, grapefruit juice, lime juice and the minced garlic along with the acidophilus powder and flax seed oil. Blend all the ingredients thoroughly and drink this mixture thrice a day.

Liver Cleansing Recipe # 2

  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ¾ cup lemon juice
  • ½ cup grapefruit juice

Using a blender mix the grapefruit juice, lemon juice and the olive oil until all the ingredients are well blended. Have this juice thrice a day for 3 consecutive days to cleanse your liver.

As the liver cleansing diet eliminates the use of high calorie food and processed food products it also helps you to lose weight.
