Nerds Without Glasses - Chapter Two

Part 2...
UserName3: I’m a little bit older than you. You should know me through someone.

MaddieQ: How old is a little bit?

UserName3: Just a year.

MaddieQ: So you go to my school?

UserName3: Yes!

MaddieQ: Well, that narrows it down to at least a thousand students.

UserName3: Isn’t it great?! I'll narrow it down my more than half. I’m a guy.

MaddieQ: Well, now I’m afraid. What if you’re some nerdy guy sitting behind a computer? I’ll never know…

UserName3: I promise you I’m not.

MaddieQ: How do I know you’re not lying?

UserName3: You don’t, and there’s no way I can tell or show you without revealing myself.

MaddieQ: What if, you’re some creepy old guy sitting behind a computer?

UserName3: That’s disgusting. I’m definitely not a creeper.

MaddieQ: Well, I’m going to believe you, but I’m not sure about it.

UserName3: Okay, baby steps.

MaddieQ: Can’t you give me another clue?

UserName3: What do you want to know?

MaddieQ: What can you tell me?

UserName3: I could tell you a lot, but then that could give me away.

MaddieQ: Come on please.

UserName3: I have brown hair.

MaddieQ: That’s some help.

UserName3: Yeah, good luck trying to figure out who I am.

MaddieQ: Is that a challenge?

UserName3: Definitely.

MaddieQ: So in three weeks exactly. The carnival will be having its closing night. I'll meet you by the games booth and if I don’t figure it out, you win.

UserName3: Deal!

MaddieQ: You’re on.

I closed my laptop. My investigation had just started, he had brown hair, he wasn’t a nerd and I should know him. He was a senior which makes him one year older than me. He goes to my school. Alright Maddie may attention.

I went to sleep and woke up early. I went for a run. I was already thinking about this mystery guy and my head was so filled with all of this that I ran smack into Dave.

"Hey, sorry, wasn’t watching where I was going," I said.

"That’s alright," he told me.

Dave was Maggie's brother. And Maggie was my best friend. I didn’t really know Dave, other than his name.

"Tell Maggie that I need to talk to her when she gets to school." I said.

"Yeah, sure no problem." He said smiling and then I took off towards home.

I took a shower and then left for school. I was still early so I sat in the main lobby.

I knew everyone in my school. The final bell rang while people hurried and ran to class. And then it was empty.

He said, I should know him, I knew who everyone was in the school, that didn’t help. At all.

An IM popped up.

UserName3: So detective, what are you doing in the lobby?

MaddieQ: Why should I tell you?

I knew he was watching. I didn’t know how, but I just did.

UserName3: Because I’m interested.

MaddieQ: Well if you give some, you’ll get some information.

UserName3: Sounds fair, you first.

MaddieQ: Why me first?

UserName3: Because, Ladies first.

MaddieQ: I’m doing research.

UserName3: Oh.

MaddieQ: So, by confirming you are here, I know that I am one step closer to finding out who you are.

UserName3: Clever, it might not take you three weeks after all. Well, two weeks and six days.

"Why are you sitting on the floor?" Maggie asked coming over to me.

"Talking to a stranger," I said.

"What?!"

"Well, actually it’s a senior in this school. Remember yesterday when I broke down and hauled out of class? Someone emailed me about it and I’ve been IMing him ever since. We made a deal, I'm going to figure out who he is by the end of the carnival," I said.

"How do you know he goes to this school?", she asked curiously.

"He told me," I said "He also told me he’s not a nerd, I should know him through someone if I don’t know him already, he has brown hair and he’s a year older than me," I said trying to remember all that he had told me yesterday.

"Are you IMing him right now?" Maggie asked.

"Yeah, you want to talk to him?"

"Sure," she said taking the laptop and sitting on the ground next to me.

MaddieQ: Who is this?

UserName3: I thought we had past introductions.

MaddieQ: Well, guess what? I don’t know who you are and you don’t know who I am!

UserName3: You’re Madison. No wait. You’re Maggie.

"Is he watching?" She asked me wide-eyed.

"I don’t know," I said shrugging and looking around the room.

UserName3: So Maggie, you definitely know me.

MaddieQ: Oh really, that narrows it down. I know everyone!

UserName3: That’s what Madison said.

MaddieQ: I’m sure, hey since you won’t budge. Why don’t you send over a list of all the guys with brown hair in the senior class?

UserName3: Sure. It’s already done.

MaddieQ: That fast? Do you want her to win?

UserName3: It’s a challenge, it’s going to be fun.

MaddieQ: Well, good luck I guess.

UserName3: Thank you.

The bell rang and I grabbed the laptop and headed off to the rest of my day.
