Nicotine withdrawal side effects is one of the hurdles that you may have to deal with if you are on your way to take the decision to quit smoking.
With a humongous effort, you finally make up your mind to make a wise decision to quit smoking. But what are these unusual symptoms you are experiencing and why are they appearing when you are doing a good thing for your health? These are nothing but the side effects of nicotine withdrawal from the body. These side effects occur as the body begins to adjust living without the constant input of nicotine into the system. These side effects may be more overwhelming for those who have been smoking for several years, and have caused themselves to develop what is known as nicotine dependence. So as I was saying, most people are just not able to keep up with their resolution of quitting smoking, only because they cannot tolerate these side effects. However, the good news is, these side effects do not have a long life, or in other words, they occur temporarily.

Physical Symptoms
As mentioned earlier, the body gets accustomed to the input of nicotine in its system. That is why when this supply is stopped suddenly, the body protests in the form of certain physical side effects. The common ones include:
  • Muscle cramps at multiple places in the body
  • Digestion disorders like vomiting or nausea
  • Cough, common cold, sore throat and other problems of the respiratory system of the body
  • Symptoms of flu
  • Headache
  • Eating disorders like increased appetite, which has obesity as one of its complications
  • Tingling sensations in the limbs
  • Drying of lips, skin, tongue or mouth
Psychological Symptoms
It may be an obvious thing to consider that the person would experience withdrawal symptoms which would be associated with his mental being. The ones which experts have found to be the most common include:
  • Increased irritability
  • Confusion
  • Affected memory
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety symptoms
  • Aggressiveness
How Long Does Nicotine Withdrawal Last
The withdrawal duration is not the same with everyone. It depends on how long has the person been smoking and how intense are the withdrawal side effects. However, as a general observation, most people were found to have dealt with the most severe kinds of side effects within the first few days. And it may take about two months or so for them to diminish completely. In rare cases, nicotine withdrawal extends longer than two months.

One of the effective strategies to overcome the side effects is by using nicotine supplements. Such products do help, when used properly. Common supplements include nasal spray and skin patch. Some people may also benefit from inhalers or gums. Also, there are certain prescription medications which are known to help people stop smoking and keep them from resorting to the habit. These medicines can be easily availed at the chemist's shop.

There are other ways of getting addicted to nicotine, apart from smoking tobacco products. However, since smoking happens to the most common method, I have stressed on it more in this article. Smoking has no good thing attached to it. First it affects your health, and when you try leaving it, it again does the same.
