Spotlight - Chapter 14

Well, she had no right to lie to me... to any of us.

I found myself the way I left. Curled up in a ball, I was under the sheets of my bed while the London light spilled through the window, reminding me that life did go on. However, I didn't want it to. I recalled the lonely plane ride home and the cold walk to the car as the press snapped all the photos they could have of me. I recalled the tearful reunion with my parents as soon as I came through the doors.

I heard the door click and footsteps reach my bed.

"Alice," My father's voice echoed in my empty bedroom.

"I don't feel like Alice anymore." I murmur.

"I understand that this all unraveled in a different way than what you had planned, but is there anything else wrong? You seem extremely upset," He smoothed my hair.

"When did you realize you loved Mother?" I turn onto my back so I could watch his face. He sat back and thought for a few moments.

"The second she walked out of my room after I made a conceded remark," Father tells me a story I've never heard before.

"What did you do?" I ask, now enthralled with his memories of love.

"I ran after her, but she was so stubborn, she ran out in the rain. I finally caught up and told her that I was crazy for her, even when she is a pain in my butt," he chuckled. When I sighed he looked at me carefully, "Did you ever really love Nigel?"

"I used to think I did, but now I realize that I loved the idea of us." I stared at the ceiling above me while I spoke.

"Was there a boy in Milford?" He leads on and when I nodded he questions, "What was his name?

"Colin." I can't even begin to explain the pain that my heart felt when I finally revealed his name. I wanted to crawl under a rock at this point.

"Do you love him?"

"I think so."

"Do you want to talk about him?"

"Okay," He gave me a little smile and went onto say, "Maybe you should think about what you might want to get involved in again since you're back. I think you might want something to distract you."

"What if I told you that I wanted to come out with a statement," I look into my father's tired eyes.

"About what?"

"About being raped." I use the word because that's what it was. As soon as it escapes my mouth, his facial muscles grow tense. "I won't give details, but I won't act like it didn't happen. Plus, I want to press charges."

"Alice, it's been a few months since it happened, the police will wonder why you waited so long to come forward," He warns.

"Get our lawyer. If I learned anything from Dr. Carlson, I learned to fight for what I want and to give it to people straight. I'm done lying, Father. I need to do this, please." I beg him, much like I did when I went to America.

"If you think, that is the right thing to do for you. I'm just letting you know that it won't be very easy."

"I'm ready. As long as you and Mother are on my side." I smile as he takes my hand and nods.

"Of course, sweetie."

"Earth to Colin?!" Max throws a crumpled up napkin at me, which hits my cheek.

The crew and I were all at the corner diner eating some breakfast, however it didn't feel like I was really there. Everyone was in good conversation while I just nibbled on my toast.

"Are you okay?" Becky asks sensitively but Max breaks the conversation with tough love.

"It's been over a week since Alice left and she practically threw herself on you, but you pushed her away and now you want to have a pity party? No. I'm not dealing with this-"

"Max, stop it." Becky hissed.

"He's just being honest," I make Becky back off her boyfriend.

"Max is kind of right though," Kenny said. "You can't act this way when you were the one who pushed her away."

"Well, she had no right to lie to me... to any of us. Sorry, if I'm not all forgiving, like the rest of you guys," I bark but Macy puts up her hand, "Sh! You guys, look!" She points to the television above the bar.

"Tomorrow on the today show, Alice McCreed coming all the way from London to give us an exclusive after her transformation and months of being in hiding." It was like the earth quaked around us. She never really gave us a reason why she did what she did, but I couldn't lie, I was curious.

Standing up, I started walking out. Once out on the street, I heard footsteps behind me.

"Colin!" Becky called to me, causing me to stop in my tracks.

"What, Becky?" I hiss.

"You don't know the whole story, do you?" She sets a caring hand on my arm.

"What story?" I impatiently snap.

"She came to the shop that night to tell you why she really lied," Becky brings back memories of the back office where I had her on the desk and my want for Alice took over my entire body. She kept saying my name but I had no desire to talk. She was just trying to explain, but I didn't give her a chance.

"Becky, please, tell me everything you know." I almost begged her.

I've decided there will be one more chapter after this.
