I got up early the next morning feeling far from perfect. I was so depressed and nervous about talking with Mitchell and telling him about Alex and me. I decided to take a morning jog to clear my mind; I changed into some running shorts and a tank top. I took my iPod out of one of my desk drawers and walked downstairs and out the door.
The sun was just starting to rise, making the whole area an orange/yellow color. There was hardly anyone about on the street. I smiled slightly and popped my earphones in and started to jog further and further away from home. I didn't have a clue where I was going; but I just needed to refresh my mind. After about 10 minutes I jogged past a small primary school; there were some kids there. "Probably for a Sunday program." I thought to myself. I started to slow down into a walking pace, as I heard the kids laughing and screaming. I looked past the fence and watched as some kids played tag and a group of girls gossiping about something. I started to think back to my childhood, it was pretty messed up. I didn't have friends because no one liked that I was adopted and being fostered. I was bullied and teased about not having parents or friends. Until, that one day I was 7, Mitchell decided to shut them up for me. I sighed, I took one more look at the kids and turned around and jogged off.
By the time I got home, I was all sweaty and gross. I walked into the house and Martha was in the kitchen making pancakes. "Morning, want some pancakes?" Martha asked as she put another pancake on the pile of already made pancakes. "No thanks." I said and walked to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water. I twisted the lid off and took sips of it as I walked upstairs. I put the iPod and the bottle of water on my bedside table and walked into my bathroom. I took a longer shower than usual since I felt icky. I got out of the shower and changed into a pair of shorts and a thin navy knit jumper over a black singlet.
After my shower I walked downstairs and found Martha and Ben on the couch looking a little bit depressed.
"Um, what's wrong?" I asked as I neared the couch.
"Er, we've got something we want to talk to you about." Ben said.
"Um, oh... okay." I said getting a little nervous.
"Well, the thing is I've been offered a job. It's a really good pay and it's so much better than what I already do. I've been offered a job as deputy CEO at a company." Ben said not showing any happiness or excitement you would show if you were offered a job like this.
"This is great! Why are you guys looking so upset?!"
"Well, because the jobs in England." Martha answered.
I was speechless. Ben's new job's in England that meant we all had to move to England. I had to leave behind Em, Jed, Mitchell and Alex!
"Well, what do you think Ben?" I finally managed to say.
"It's a really good job, and this could be a once in a lifetime chance. But I wanted to okay it with you and Martha first."
"What happens if you say no?"
"Um, then Mr. Langton will have to work there without a partner."
"Wait, Mitchell's dad got offered the job as well?" I asked thinking that Mitchell would be in England too, so it wouldn't be too bad.
"Yep, we're 2 new deputy CEO's. They've already accepted the offer."
I thought at what Ben said. Mitchell's family already accepted to offer, did they make the decision without Mitchell. I mean he just moved here from England, doesn't he want a break? I don't think Mitchell would agree with something like this.
"Sam, I'll give some time to think about it, but I need an answer by tonight, okay?"
"Okay. Um, I have to go somewhere. I'll be back by dinner."
And that was it. I left the house and took my phone out of my pocket, I texted Alex while thinking about everything that just happened in the last 5 minutes.
"Help, Need to talk."
"Um, okay. Come to my place. We talk there x."
I read the message and received another with Alex's address on it. I walked to Alex's house which was about 10 minutes walk away. I reached a creamy colored 4 story house (mansion more like) with 1 balcony on the 2nd floor of the house and about 4 on the side of the house. I walked up to the door and knocked 3 times. I heard footsteps of someone walking to the door.
"Hi, how can I help you?" A man who looked so much like Alex but older stood by the door.
"Um... Is Alex home?" I asked politely.
"Yeah. Alex! Someone's here to see you!" Alex's dad yelled back into the house and walked away from the door.
After about 5 seconds I saw Alex came running down the stairs to the door wearing jeans and a white printed t-shirt.
"Hey, you wanted to talk?" Alex said gesturing me to go in to the house.
I took a step into the house and followed Alex up the stairs to the 3rd floor. I walked into his room and he shut the door behind me. Alex's was at least 3 times bigger than mine and everyone thought my room was big. His room was painted dark blue, it had a few posters of bands on his wall.
Alex took a seat on the bed and asked me looking a bit nervous, "So, what did you wanna talk about?"
"Ugh, it's so complicated."
"You're not dumping me, are you?"
"No, I like you... a lot." I said smiling. I took his hand and sat next to him.
"Then, what's wrong?"
"I might be moving to England..." I said looking at the ground.
"What? Why?" Alex said getting up and walked to the window.
"B-" I stopped, Alex knows nothing about my life. I haven't told him anything, nothing about me being in foster care and what I've been through. Am I ready to tell a secret that I only told my 3 best friends and I've only told them after I've known them for about 3 years? (Mitchell was an exception as he already suspected something being my neighbor and hearing things as well) Am I ready to tell him about what's been haunting my life?
