The Betting Game - Chapter Four

'Mia?' his voice rang in my head and just the thought of sitting together made me smile...
"What rumors?" I asked. I could feel my whole body tense at that moment. I don't like the prospect of people talking about me.

"You, do know that Tyler never takes any girl seriously? He's been dating countless girls... they all get dumped in the end. There's a rumor going on about you being his next 'victim'. You're bound to get hurt in the end, but..." her lips turned into a smug smile, "...enjoy it while it lasts."

I frowned. "Why? I mean, why would anyone think that?"

"Because he's talking to you obviously. He doesn't just waste his time talking to someone like you without a reason." She got up, her smile turning into a grin before turning towards the guys playing. "Watch me. I'll show you how you mean nothing to him."

She grabbed a water bottle from the lady down and called out to Tyler. What makes her think I expect him to like me? He might eventually but right now I only need to plan out my moves carefully. My eyes though were trained on him as he grinned, showing his pearly whites. He jogged over to Jessie and took the water bottle from her.

She laughed at something he said. He then drank half the bottle in one gulp. I shook my head when he put the bottle back down and Jessie leaned in and gave him a deep, uncomfortable kiss. I didn't need to see that!! Ugh.

He pulled back after a while - to my relief - and looked back at his teammates. They all just dropped down on the floor and high-fived each other before throwing the ball his way. He caught it easily.

"Pfftt... they so don't look good together," Clara's voice came out of nowhere making me jump in my seat. "FYI, they're not even dating. It's one-sided on her part. He just goes along with it. No strings attached."

"Why are you telling me this? I don't care. Are you done?"

"I didn't want you to get discouraged. You still have a challenge to finish, and yes I'm done," she patted her backpack and grinned.

"Then let's go."

The moment I got up, I heard my name being called. "Mia!"

I groaned, but managed a smile before turning. Tyler took long fast strides until he was standing in front of me. He flashed me an annoying smirk.

"Hey Tyler," Clara spoke up. He acknowledged her with a nod. "Hey to you too."

"Good game," I said, still forcing the smile on my face to stay.

He snorted. "What's with you? Ran out of insults?"

My smile vanished and was replaced with a scowl. "You're welcome, jerk." I could feel Carla pinch me hard on the arm, but I shrugged it off. Hey, I tried!!

"I knew something was strange. You don't have to be nice... it doesn't suit you," he shrugged. I could see the amusement in his eyes as he sighed and ran a hand through his messy brown hair. It looked rather cute. Then, out of the blue he takes off his shirt and throws it on the ground. Scratch that... he's so not cute... he's a show-off who has a really hot body.

His six packs were well-defined and to top it off, he had a hard nice V-line. I heard a chuckle, causing my head to snap up to his face. "What are you doing?!" I snapped.

He shrugged innocently. "It's hot."

"Whatever! Carla, we're leaving." Yea, we would have already left if she wasn't so busy drooling over his body. I snapped my fingers in front of her face and she snapped her jaw shut.

"What?" She asked with a dazed and confused expression.

"We're going to play one more round, wanna join?" That would be Jason who had recently sneaked behind his best friend with a goofy grin on his face. Me playing with those tall athletic guys? I would get crushed in the middle of the game.

"I can't."

"Sure, you can't. You're a shorty... not to mention.... a girl." Wow! What a sexist. I could have smashed his pretty face but then I'd rather not. Well, after seeing those abs... I don't think any damage would happen to him as much as it would to me.

"But I've seen you playing once. You're pretty good," Jason said, completely ignoring Tyler to my satisfaction. I thought I heard him groan. This time I actually did smile. He's not bad... Jason is pretty descent.

"Yea, and you love basketball," Carla butt in.

"Well, I could try I guess... and thanks."

He smiled. "No problem."

5 min. into the game and Tyler is scowling at me like it's my fault that his teammates are more interested in passing the ball to me. Jessie was long gone... thank God. I wouldn't have to hear anything from her again. I shot in 2 baskets... got to say I'm proud even though they seemed to purposefully go easier on me. I'm thankful for that though because I honestly don't think I can play full on with my skirt.

5 more min. later and I'm making my way back to Carla. She gave me a wink as we made our way to her car. I smiled. I admit that was fun... especially the Tyler scowling part. It made my day.

'Mia?' His voice rang in my head and just the thought of sitting together made me smile. We hadn't hung out much since he'd been sick and couldn't leave the house for a week. I gave him an encouraging smile. I wanted him to know that I'd protect him no matter what. His usual bright smile turned into a sad one. "I'm sorry..."
I shook my head slowly and then everything around me seemed to fall out. "No! No... come back!!"

"Mia... Mia baby wake up!"

I woke up with a gasp. Another nightmare... mum pulled me into a hug and said soothing words into my ear. "You're gonna be ok, hun?"

I nodded slowly. "Mum..." and then the tears started coming out. I sobbed over and over again while my mum just kept on whispering "It will be ok..." in my ear. I know it must be really hard for her too, but she keeps strong for me. I'm so pathetic. The nightmares were gone last year. I really don't know why they're coming back again.

After I calmed down a bit, mum kissed my forehead and got up. "You still have to go to school in a while."

Oh yea... it was 5:30 am. I got up and took a quick shower while mum went to get ready and make breakfast before going to work. By 6:10 I was ready, and had already eaten breakfast with mum. I practiced my usual smile in the mirror for a while until Carla came by.

"There's a gathering on Friday," she said as we drove to school.

"With James and Bryan?"

"No, but those two are coming to the gathering too."

"What gathering is this?"

"A senior's gathering. There's going to be a barbecue and all seniors are invited."

I sighed. "Who's hosting?"

"Does it matter? Stop asking so many questions and just focus on getting Tyler alone while we're there."

This is going to be a very interesting week. I'm happy with anything as long as it keeps my mind off Asher.

Asher, Asher... Without him life isn't that meaningful anymore.

I'm kinda disappointed with the lack of comments, so I've been waiting for more comments to post the next chapter.

Aya, Kyshia, and Maha - Your comments made me want to post today. So thanks a lot. So, umm... I'm graduating today (5/6/2013). This is also another reason to why I really wanted to post.
