The Distance Wedged Between Us

Hanging on for the sake of it.
Is the romance in your head the reason for your fantasy?
And when the bubble finally bursts will you break down at reality?
The roses have long since withered to leave the essence of a fart,
And the distance wedged between us breaks my heart.

We've been going round in circles like two goldfish in a bowl,
Passing by like strangers, each searching for a soul,
In a purgatory loneliness, casting shadows, long and dark,
And the distance wedged between us breaks my heart.

Like a phantom in an opera, I hear your aria now and then,
It sings to me of sadness, like a dirge to long-lost friends,
A psalm that reeks of sorrow, an ancient epitaph of sorts,
And the distance wedged between us breaks my heart.

A misty image in the mirror hints of memory long since lost,
Floating in the distant eon of some primordial ghost,
It evaporates before me into a billion atomic parts,
And the distance wedged between us breaks my heart.

I hear the echo of a youthful voice crying out it's woe,
It is mocking in its malcontent with a Ha! Ha! told you so,
In a surge of ancient doubt that has niggled from the start,
And the distance wedged between us breaks my heart.

So you've lit another candle to light the darkness where we tread,
It's just another empty gesture to a romance long since dead,
It seems we're destined to drift through life, together, yet apart,
And the distance wedged between us breaks my heart!
