Until You - Chapter 22

"I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal." - Jacob. 15 comments! Enjoy!
*Ray's POV*

"Ray, wake up!" Amelia shakes me awake. Groaning, I turn my face into the pillow.
"Because you have to get out of the house before Mom gets up."

Sighing, I slowly turn towards her and it takes a few seconds before my eyes adjust to the dim lighting and I can see her. Propped up on an elbow, her hair's falling around her face, the top of her gray shirt having slid over her shoulder, leaving it bare.

"But I wanna stay here with you."
She sighs and leans over, pressing her lips to my forehead. "And I want you to stay too."
"Then why can't I?"
"Because Mom will see you coming out of my bedroom."
"And she'll think things that are most probably true. And that's embarrassing."
"But surely she knows you aren't innocent." I tease.
"But that's something else!"
"Fine, fine. I'll go." Sighing, I sit up.

"Let me just check." I watch as she gets out of bed and walks over to her door. Amelia slips out and I sit in the silence, waiting for her return. A figure slips back in, softly closing the door. "She's awake!"
"Really? Isn't it early?"
"Yeah, she probably couldn't sleep." Amelia sits down by the edge of the bed, chewing on her lip.
"Well then. There's nothing I can do. Night." I lie back down.
"Okay, okay. What do you want to do?"
"I don't know."
"You could distract her and I'll sneak out."
"Yeah, I could.."

I smile, hearing her indecision. "Or you could go and see her and ask her if she's fine. Then say you're still tired and will sleep in a bit and come back to bed with me. When you do decide to get up, I'll sneak out." When she doesn't answer immediately, I press on. "Come on Meals, please?"
"Fine." She sighs, standing up. "I'll be right back."

Smiling, I watch as she leaves the room and then snuggle down under her blanket. Amelia's mom... kind of lost it when her husband died four years ago. Amelia moved in with her for a bit before finally making her mom move into the flat she lives in. It was close to work and she could keep an eye on her all the same. Most of the time she's fine but then she gets dazed and just... wanders around. Amelia found her in quite a few dangerous situations before and worried about her constantly.

I'm just falling asleep when I feel the bed shift next to me.
"Hey." I reach for her and pull her close, burying my face in the crook of her neck.
"For a guy, you sure do love to cuddle."
I chuckle, "Being best friends with a girl, things grow on you."

Hearing her tone change slightly, I pull back to look at her. "You need to be there for a friend. Chloe had bad days, horrid break ups and times when she's just needed a hug. For the past eleven years, we've been there for each other when no one else has, so we're bound to rub a few things off of one another."
"Yes, of course. Especially when you live with them."
"Amelia, what's wrong?" I turn to my side and prop myself up on my elbow, looking down at her.
"Nothing. I just want to sleep."

"Yeah, right. What's wrong?" When she doesn't answer, I sigh. "Amelia, Chloe hardly ever even sleeps at home anymore. She's with Jacob most of the time and now he's there for her, except when he's the problem, but the point is, you should know by now that I love her to bits but as a friend! As my sister, nothing more."
"I'm not jealous of Chloe, Ray. Or even bothered that you two are so close."
"Then?" I ask, gently.
"Look where we are! Hiding out from my mother in my bedroom."
"So?" Amelia just shakes her head, sighing. "How's that a problem? I'm with you, I'm happy."
"And what if I were to tell you that I always have to be with my mother? That I can never just leave her?"
"Okay. And?"
"Ray, it can never be just the two of us!"

"Yes it can. So maybe later on, your mom will live with us. Big deal. I understand your predicament and I really respect the fact that you take your responsibility so seriously. And I really like your mom! It's not like we don't get along. As long as we're together, it is just the two of us." Amelia just stares up at me in silence. "Look. I can't give you everything Meals alright? I see how Jacob spoils Chloe with gifts and surprise trips and what-not and I feel... sad that I can't do everything he does for you."

"I don't want any of that."
"I know but I mean in respect to the things you do want."
"I don't want anything."
"Good. That's a relief!" Her mouth falls open and she laughs softly. "Are you alright now?" I lean down and brush my lips across hers.

It's quiet as I lay down again and pull her to me. She snuggles down in my arms without complaint and I close my eyes.
"How are they?" Amelia asks quietly.
"Fine." I answer, not needing to ask who.
"Has Chloe moved in with him?"
"No, I don't think she'll be doing that anytime soon. He stays in a hotel remember?"
"Ah yes. He travels a lot doesn't he?"
"Yeah." I sigh. "I don't know when that's going to turn into a problem."
"Especially considering he doesn't live here."
"But I have a feeling he might."
"Really?" I turn my head and look at her.
"Yeah, he loves her."
"He does?" I stare at Amelia.
"You mean he hasn't told her yet?"
"No, I'm sure I'd have gotten all the details if he had. How do you know?"

Amelia shrugs. "It's so obvious. The way he looks at her just says it all. It's like even with a room full of people and standing on the other side, his eyes are on her continuously."
"Yeah I have noticed that. But how does that...?"
"The way he talks about her. So adoringly, his words are literally full of admiration."
"How do you notice all of that?" I ask, impressed.
"It's a girl thing." Amelia smirks.
"So," I raise an eyebrow. "Do I love you?"
She rolls her eyes, "Now that is a tricky question!"

*Chloe's POV*

"So, you never told me." I say pulling out of the school parking lot as Alice buckles up.
I glance behind her at a car across the road, a tall boy leaning against it and watching us. "What happened between you and Eric?"
She shrugs. "We broke up."
"No kidding, Einstein. Why?"
She chuckles, "He was becoming... possessive? He didn't want me hanging out with Darren. And that didn't work out with me."
"So you just broke up?"
"I tried to reason with him but he wouldn't listen. And then he was warning Darren off one day. Complete asshole."
I lightly whack the back of her head. "Watch your language."

"Sorry, but it's true. She ducks as my hand shoots out again. "So yeah."
"And you and Darren?"
"It just happened."
"Oh, so one day you're hanging out as friends and then the next you're a couple."
"Yup." She answers, popping her P.
"Okay, okay. We were practicing for your song and he just kissed me. And then apologized and freaked. Me and my big mouth, I blurted out that it was fine, I liked it. And then sort of pushed him into asking me out."

I laugh, "You're the only one who'd do that to my innocent Dare."
"Hey, he isn't innocent. He's a great kisser."
"No kidding."
"I swear, he is! Not that you're ever going to find out."
"Oh, who's becoming possessive now?"
"What? You don't let me kiss Jacob!"
"He's too old for you!"
"But he's Hot!" She whines.
She shrugs. "You couldn't stop me dancing with him."
I chuckle, glancing at her. "I knew you'd enjoyed that!"
"Hey, if you weren't there..."
I slap the back of her head again. "Hands off my man, woman!"

"Go on home." I tell Tarek, "I'll help close up."
"No, it's fine."
"Tarek, you're exhausted! Look at you! Go home. It's an order."
He stares at me for a second before his shoulders fall. "Alright."
"And you're taking the week off."
"No way. I'm going home early. That's it."

"No you're taking the week off. Paid vacation. How could you not want it?"
"Chloe, I haven't sat home a day since... well, for a few years. I'm not starting now."
"Okay, but you're relaxing this week. I'm coming everyday anyway."
"Sure, sure." He sighs before heading to the back, already removing his apron.

The last customer walks out and I head towards the door to lock it just as it's pushed open once more.

Jacob steps inside, shaking his head to clear off the snowflakes in his hair. In a black trench coat over his work clothes, he looks great. As always.
"Hey!" He grins looking up to see me.
"Hi." I wrap my arms around his neck as he leans in and kisses me. "How are you?"
"Fantastic! You done here?"

I lead him to the counter, where he sits down on a stool. A waitress comes out and starts cleaning the booths and I empty the till, counting all the money.
"Look at that! Someone's filthy rich." Jacob chuckles, leaning forward.
I fan myself with the money. "Oh, this? It's nothing!"
He laughs, "You better be taking me out for a treat!"
I raise an eyebrow. "What for?"
"For being the best boyfriend ever."
"Sure." I scoff and he laughs.
Twenty minutes later, I'm locking up the bakery.
"You've got your car?" Jacob asks.
"Yup. Why?"
"I wanted to take you home with me."
"Let's stop by my place. I'll just grab some things."
"Okay." He smiles, cheered up and I hold back a laugh. "I'll follow you."

"Okay. Let's go!" I buckle my seat belt and glance at Jacob.
"Have you had dinner?" He asks, turning around a corner. "Because I'm starving!"
"Yeah but I don't mind eating something."
"What do you want to eat?"
"I don't know." I look at him.

Jacob glances at me as he stops at a traffic light. His expression sort of dims. "Chloe, there's something I need to tell you."
His eyes scan my face. "I'm going to be traveling all week."
"What?!" My face falls, I know, but there's nothing I can do to make myself smile and say it's alright.
"Yeah, I'll be back on Friday night. There are meetings all week and I'm not staying in any one city for more than a night."
"That's why I want you with me tonight. I'm going to miss you." He runs a finger across my cheek and I turn away.
"Come on. It's green."
"So what do you want to eat?" He asks, cheerfully, as he starts driving.
"I don't know." I answer, turning to the window.

I can feel Jacob's eyes on me but he doesn't say anything. It's silent in the car as he drives and pulls up at McDonald's. He orders for the both of us and then continues driving to his hotel.

I know it's not his fault. That I shouldn't be upset but I am. It's his work, I should be understanding and he doesn't look like he wants to go either but I can't help it. Jacob parks the car at his hotel and we both get out. I grab my bag that's holding my clothes and he takes our food. We walk into the hotel lobby and he leads the way to the elevator.

"What's wrong sweetheart?" As the doors close, his arm comes around me.
"Nothing." I look up at him and smile, although it's forced.
"You sure?"
I nod. "Yup."
He looks at me, a crease between his eyebrows that appears when he's thinking, but then just nods.

In his suite, Jacob places the food on the coffee table and I head into his bedroom. I don't realize he's come in as well until I turn around.
"You alright?" Jacob asks, pulling me into his arms.
"Yeah, I am." I smile. It comes more easily this time. It's only a week right? I'll be fine.
"Sure?" He leans in close, pressing his forehead against mine.

Reaching up, I press my mouth against his. He's thinking along the same lines as me because he kisses me back, hard. It's much later that we actually get to eating our cold burgers.

I kiss Jacob goodbye and watch as he drives away, heading to the airport. Sighing, I sling my bag over my shoulder and head up to my flat. Ray isn't in and so I head to my room to unpack.

An hour later, I hear the front door open and slam shut. Ray knocks on my door and walks in smiling.
"Hey! How are you?"
I nod, smiling. "Good! You?"
"Great!" He looks around the room. "What are you doing?"
"Cleaning." I shrug, turning back to my wardrobe. "How's work?"
"Good." He walks over to my bed and sits down. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." I shoot him a confused look. "Why?"
"Because you're cleaning your wardrobe."
"Chloe, whenever you start cleaning wardrobes and cupboards, I know there's something bothering you." I choose not to answer him and he sighs. "How's Jacob?"
"Where is he?"
I glare at my wardrobe before answering. "Traveling."

"Oh." His tone is one of comprehension and I refuse to turn around and look at him. "Well, I need to be getting back to work. I just came to get something."
"Okay." I continue folding and placing my clothes inside. Ray gets up and walks towards the door, hesitating for a second. "Chloe, he'll be back soon. Go to work, distract yourself, you're not helping by staying at home. I don't think he'd like it if he knew you were upset."

Groaning, I drop my head into my hands when he's gone.
Why does he know everything?
He's so annoying.
I head over to my bakery after an hour. Ray's right. As always.

But there isn't much to do. My staff have gotten used to carrying the responsibilities without me and it's an unusually quiet afternoon today. I head to my office and for forty minutes sort out the accounts but my mind keeps wandering to aimless things. I throw my pencil between the pages of my account book and grabbing my coat, slip out the back.

It's a beautiful day outside. It started snowing two days ago but not really heavily. There's a cool breeze and with the sun beaming down, it's nice to feel the wind on my face. I walk to a nearby park, buying a hot dog on the way, and sit down on a bench. I watch children playing on the swings, parents watching nearby, dog owners walking their pets and the occasional jogger.

My phone starts ringing just as I'm done eating and I pull it out. My spirits immediately lift as I see Jacob's name.
"Hi beautiful. I just landed in Victoria."
"That's great! How was your flight? How are you?"
"Good, good. I'm fine. How are you?"
"I'm alright." I look down at the wrapper I'm unconsciously folding into squares.
"Why? What's wrong?"
"Nothing." I frown. "Why does everyone keep asking me that?"
"Because sweetheart, you always say fine, great. Never alright. So what's wrong?"
"Chloe, please." I hear an announcement being made. He's still in the airplane.
"Do you need to go?"
"Nope. So tell me."
"It's nothing Jacob."
"Chloe." His voice is pleading.

I sigh, "It's just that... I don't want you to travel. It's been so long since you last traveled that. I guess I've just got used to it. What I'm trying to say I guess, I know it doesn't matter, it really is nothing, and I know it's your job and all but I really miss you." I quickly mumble, hoping he won't catch it all but not wanting him to ask me to repeat either.

Jacob sighs, I'm not sure why exactly but he doesn't say anything.
"Jacob?" I ask slowly.
"Just hold on a second, beautiful."

With the sounds following, I'm guessing he's getting off the plane. It's a few minutes before he speaks.

"Why didn't you tell me before? I knew there was something bothering you last night but you kept denying it and I just thought you didn't want to talk or maybe that you were tired or something." Jacob sighs again, his voice low, soft. "Chloe, believe me, I miss you too. So much. I don't want to travel either! But I don't really have a choice. I've been pushing this trip for about a fortnight but with all the meetings this week I didn't really have a choice. Trust me, I miss you so much more."

"You can't. I already do."
He chuckles, "And it's not nothing alright? You tell me when you're upset, I don't want you holding back and feeling miserable. You share everything in a relationship, even each other's misery. Your feelings are important. Okay?"
"Okay." I smile.
"And I'll be back soon. I know five days looks like a long time, but we'll count down together alright? And in the weekend we'll do something. Just the two of us. I'll take you away somewhere so that we're not disturbed."
"I can't." I sigh. "We're catering Saturday night remember?"
"Oh yes." He hesitates. "It's alright. We'll stay home."
"Maybe my staff could do without me."

"No. No way. Your work is just as important as mine. More important. They need you and I'm not taking you away then. And anyway, you're the one always saying I need to get behind the counter and show you my cooking skills. Sunday I'll spend the whole day working with you. Show you how you excel me in that department as well."

"What other department do I excel in?"
"You want me to specify?" He asks, his voice teasing and I feel my cheeks heat up.
"Point taken."
"I'll call you later okay sweetheart? I need to get a cab and get to the office. The meeting starts in an hour."
"Okay." I sigh, getting up from the bench. I throw the wrapper away. "I'll get back to the bakery."
"Where are you?"
"At the park. I needed some air."
"It's so much colder here!" He groans.
I laugh, "Good."
"Naughty girl. I'm not sure I like that sort of response."
"Not sure? When you're sure, please let me know."
Jacob laughs, "Okay smart mouth. Take care."
"You too."

It's past ten when the delivery guy walks through the door. I'm leaning against the counter off to the side, watching everyone. The delivery guy walks in holding a beautiful bouquet of roses. My eyes immediately lock on him and I follow him as he walks up to till towards Susan. She asks him if she can help him and then nods, smiling before turning and pointing at me. As he approaches me, I stand up straight.

"Chloe Stevens?"
"Yes." I nod.
"Express delivery. Please sign here." He hands me the clipboard and I scribble my name down before handing it over. Smiling, he hands me the flowers. "Good evening."
"Thank you. Same to you."

Sighing, I bury my nose into the flowers and smile. A dozen long stemmed roses. It could only ever be one person. I tug at the card slipped beneath the ribbon, expecting it to be a printed card. But it's written in Jacob's handwriting.

I wish I was there with you at this moment. I knew I'd miss you but by the way you're occupying my every thought, it'd be a miracle if I don't get told off at work!

Take care of yourself for me. Four more days until I'm whole again.

Biting my lip, I run my fingers over his words.
Four more days....

The days are bearable, the nights endless. I toss and turn and it's at least a few hours until I find a comfortable spot and fall into a restless sleep.

Tuesday a box of chocolates arrives while I'm working. A huge box of chocolates. Along with another note.

Three more days until I can once again taste the sweetest lips in the world.

Blushing, I tuck it into my pocket and even after sharing the chocolates with my staff not even half of it is done. I'm going to put on so much weight the way this guy makes me eat.

Wednesday, Erika drops by and insists we go out. She reveals that she's pregnant while we're having lunch and that she wants me to come baby shopping with her. I'm ecstatic for her and James, and he does eventually join us late in the evening for a half hour before I head back to Little Miracles. Alice is in love with Jacob, in an admiring, he's what prince charming means kind of way and is literally bouncing off her feet when I walk in. She shoves a box into my face.

"The delivery guy came two hours ago and Tarek signed it. And I can't wait for you to open it! I want to see what he got you this time!"
I chuckle, "Ever stopped to think it might be private?"
"Nope and I'm not starting now! So come on!"

Laughing, I lead her to the back and then open the box, excited. The wrapping falls away to reveal a dessert recipes book.
"Aw man! It's great!" She quickly corrects herself, "I was just expecting something more...romantic."
"It is! Now get lost!" I playfully push her away, already reaching for the note attached.

Saw this in duty-free while I was waiting for my next flight. Reminded me of you. Enjoy!
Two more days for those beautiful eyes to be looking at me and not at the book.

Thursday, after a night with absolute zero sleep, I decide to stay home and go to the bakery in the evening. Since that's when all the parcels arrive. I clean the house, not much, and cook a bit. Ray stays home and we get to spend some time together before he leaves to go see Amelia.

When I reach the bakery, Darren is there instead of Alice. He immediately pulls me to the back and I stare at the big box placed on my desk.

"What could it be?"
"I have no idea!" He shrugs, "Should I leave? Is it something private?"
"I don't know." I shoot him a smile, "Stay."
Dropping my bag on the chair, I pull back the wrapping. Once we can see the box clearly, I gasp.
"No way!"
"What is it?" He pushes back the wrapping and reads the label on the box.
"It's this thing I was looking at the other day. I told Jacob all about it and how it works and everything! But it's like crazy expensive and very exclusive. You don't get it everywhere!"
"It's the new mega blender?" Darren asks, his voice awed.
"Wow. He really is..." He trails away, but it wouldn't matter. I'd probably not have heard him anyway.

Spotting the note tucked in the corner, I pull it out.

1 more day till I'm in your arms again. Miss you.

I can't sleep. My eyes keep wandering over to my phone on my night table.
Jacob's flight should have landed by now.
Sighing, I close my eyes just as my phone goes off, announcing a message has arrived.
I grab my phone, sitting up.

Hey beautiful! Don't want to wake you. I just landed in Brampton. Flight was fine! Miss you. Sweet dreams.

Sighing in relief, I reread the message before snuggling down into my pillow.
He's home.
But I still can't sleep. I turn around, trying to get comfortable but all I keep feeling is his arms around me.
"Why?!" I groan into my pillow.

Ten minutes later, my phone starts ringing. I reach over for it, already knowing who it is.
"Hello?" I breathe.
"Hey. Did I wake you?"
"No," I sigh, lying back down. "You didn't. I can't sleep."
"I just had to hear your voice."
"I'm glad you called. How was your flight?"
"It was good. Listen... Do me a favor?"
"Yeah, sure."
"Okay. I need to go, but could you just open your front door for a second? I'll call as soon as I've caught a cab. Promise."
"Okay. But why do you want me to open my front door?"
"Just do it sweetheart. I'll call in a minute."

I stare at my phone as he hangs up. Wait. You know he might just be...
Chucking my phone onto the table, I scramble out of bed.

My foot gets caught in my blanket and I fall down onto the floor with a loud thud.
"Oooh that hurts!" I rub my foot, untangling it from the blanket before standing up slowly. Not bad.
I carefully walk towards my door and open it quietly before walking towards the front door. Unlocking it, I slowly pull it open.

Jacob's standing on the other side, a smile across his lips.

Stifling a scream, I launch myself at him, completely uncaring of the fact that I'm in pajamas and now in the hallway of the building I live in.

Jacob's arms come around me, holding me tight. He sighs. "I missed you."

Smiling, I look at him and he pulls us into the apartment, quietly closing the front door behind him. I reach over his shoulder and lock it before turning my complete attention to him.

"I can't believe you're here!"
"I don't think I could have survived another night without you!" He leans in and presses his lips over mine.
Oh God. I've missed him.
Wrapping my arms around his neck, I pull him down closer.
"Come on. We don't want to wake up Ray." Jacob lets me go, just taking a hold of my hand. I lead him into my bedroom, wincing at the pain in my right foot.
"You alright?"
"Yeah," I smile, "Completely fine!"
Jacob chuckles, closing the door behind him.

I wait for him in bed as he freshens up in my washroom. I'd sneaked into Ray's bedroom and gotten a pair of joggers for him. I already had a shirt of his here from the last time he'd stayed over.

He came straight from the airport here in his car. The washroom door opens and he steps out, running a hand through his hair. He looks exhausted.

I scoot over in bed, making some room for him, and after turning off the light, Jacob joins me.
"Come here." His arms enclose me once more and I happily snuggle into his chest. "I don't know how I survived."
"Me neither."

Jacob chuckles, getting up and leaning on his elbow. My room isn't dark, the streetlights casting a dim light through the blinds and I can see him clearly.

He leans down and brushes his lips across mine. I turn towards him and then wince at the sudden pain shooting up my foot.

"What is it? What's wrong?" He moves away slightly, concern apparent on his face.
I shake my head, "Nothing. I just twisted my foot."
"How?" Jacob's already getting up and turning on the light. He sits at the foot of the bed and pushes the blanket away, his warm fingers working over my feet. "Which one?"
"How Chloe?" I groan as he presses against it. "I'm sorry!"
"It's alright. I was getting out of bed and I tripped."
"Did it happen now?" He looks at me, an expression of guilt flashing across his face.
"Yeah, it was my fault."
"Where does it hurt?" He gently starts pressing on my foot.
"Just when I move it suddenly. Ouch! And there."
"I'm sorry. Do you want me to get ice for it?"
"No," I shake my head, reaching for him. "I'll be fine."

He looks at me intently for a minute before nodding. Dropping his head down, he kisses the heel of my right foot before pulling my blanket up. Jacob turns off the light and seconds later, pulls me slowly back into his chest.
"Why don't you take care of yourself?" He asks, kissing my forehead.
"I do!"
"Then how did that happen?"

I close my eyes as he runs a hand down my back. The other hand cupping the back of my head, he presses his lips to mine. I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling Jacob down on top of me and kissing him back, hard.

"So I didn't get any delivery today." I say when he pulls back.
Jacob chuckles, "Didn't you just open the door to find me outside?"
I groan. "Ugh. It was you? I was looking forward to it all day!"
"Hey! Watch it young lady! I might take a longer business trip next time."
"You can go for as long as you want." I answer back, my arms immediately tightening around him and holding him to me just at the thought of it. "I don't care."
"Of course not!" He chuckles, lowering his head down to my neck. His voice turns serious. "I actually do have one planned for next week..."
"Just kidding." He murmurs, his warm breath blowing against my neck. He turns us over so that I'm lying on top of him. "I wouldn't leave this bed for the world after this week!"
