Vampire Royalty - Chapter 12

Are you really going to let her die? Can you? Theresa died, but you didn’t have the chance to save her. Now you have Skye, are you really going to let her go?
*Jace's POV*

"J-Jace."
Skye’s pleading voice filled up my mind, haunting me. I felt my heartbeat quicken, pounding against my chest as panic exploded deep within me. I couldn’t rip my eyes off her, I simply couldn’t.

This was what the council had wanted. They wanted her dead, and I had almost accomplished it. I would be heavily rewarded, and I would finally be free, free from the Council’s hands - they would finally leave me and my family alone. My eyes traveled to her angelic face, wincing as I watched her gasp in pain. I felt my hands ball up into fists as I gritted my teeth. Let her die, Jace. Let her go. She doesn’t mean anything to you. She’s nothing.

That’s what I had wanted to be believe, but there was another voice in my head, a voice that had been growing stronger and stronger ever since I’d met Skye. 'Are you really going to let her die? Can you? Theresa died, but you didn’t have the chance to save her. Now you have Skye, are you really going to let her go?' That’s when something snapped. My hands shot forward, snaking around Skye’s back. I pulled her up roughly, my eyes lowering onto her bare neck. My mouth skimmed over the skin, making me close my eyes as I breathed in the sweet scent. I felt her whimper as my fangs grazed lightly over her skin. An angry voice was yelling in my head, furious for what I was about to do. 'What the hell are you doing, Jace? The Council will never forgive you for this.' I ignored the voice, pulling her closer to me as my fangs dug deeper into her neck. She let out a weak moan, no longer shaking with pain. A flare of emotions exploded inside of me, some that I couldn’t even recognize. A sweet sensation followed as I savored the taste of her blood. I seemed to have lost control, my mind was yelling, wanting more and more of her blood. 'Snap out of it, Jace. If you don’t stop now, she’ll never wake up ever again.' I pushed her away roughly, pulling my fangs out of her skin. I wiped my mouth with the sleeve of my coat, taking in a sharp breath.

"My, my. I think I’ve just witnessed a felony. The Council will never forgive you for this."
The razor-sharp voice sliced through the air. I whipped myself around, finding a pair of silver eyes glaring right at me. My whole body tensed as I braced myself.
"Scar," I muttered.
Scar smirked, brushing away a strand of loose brown hair that had escaped from his short ponytail. Like me, he was also a vampire royal - the prince from the Thelon family, a family who had always worked with the Council. He cocked his head sideways, his eyes narrowing at Skye, who lay shivering on the ground. I rushed to her side immediately. Scar chuckled, the same cold laugh that I had grown accustomed to, in the last century where I had started working for the Council.

"You cured her." He observed me for a moment, scowling. "You were supposed to kill her."
He cracked his knuckles.
"Seems like I’ll have to take care of this myself, before the others get here. Now, any last words, comrade?"

I didn’t bother replying. I pressed my lips together, concentrating on building up my powers. I couldn’t let Scar get away and tell the Council about this - I needed all the extra time that I could get. I crouched, ready in my battle position. Scar struck out, shooting out his fist, aiming a punch at me. I sidestepped, catching his arm and twisting it. He growled as the pain grew. His silver eyes grew darker, and he let out an angry hiss. An electrical zap shot throughout my entire body, making my grip on him become loose. I cured under my breath. I had forgotten about how strong the Thelon Clan was, especially with their element. We zoomed around, striking out at each other, lashing out.

That’s when a growl sounded through the air. From the corner of my eye, I could see a large four-legged creature leaping towards us. Its fur was a strange creamy-white color, and it had large golden eyes. A strong scent caught in my nose immediately, but it wasn’t the disgusting odor that you would expect from a werewolf. Scar’s eyes widened as he realized just what was about to happen. The white werewolf threw itself at Scar, knocking him to the ground. That’s when I noticed that Skye had disappeared from her spot. Something caught in my throat. The white werewolf was Skye. Thoughts were running through my mind wildly, screaming and shouting. 'Why was she helping me even though I had originally intended for her to die? Didn’t she hear that I worked for the Council? That the way I had acted around her was a lie all this time?'

Pushing the thoughts away, I shot out a bold filled with blue light towards Scar. He gasped in pain as the bolt it him, clawing fiercely at Skye. She let out a soft, whimpering cry as Scar’s sharp nails had suddenly dug its way into her soft pelt. Grabbing her roughly, he hauled her off himself, making her smash into a tree trunk. A spark of fury shot through me and I felt a wave of adrenaline kick off inside me. I zoomed towards the tree next to me, digging my fingers into the wood. Focusing all my power onto my arms, I pulled with great force. A loud, cracking noise screeched through the air as I pulled the tree out of the dirt. I hauled the tree at Scar, watching the wood smash into pieces as it hit the ground. My eyes darted around, trying to find Scar. He was nowhere to be found. I scowled.

He had escaped. It was only a matter of time before the Council would find out.
I hurried over to Skye, who was now back in her ordinary human form, except that she was no longer a human. She lay in a curled up position, her skin a pale-white color. My heart twisted at the sight, as if it were too painful to watch. I snaked my arm around her back, letting her head rest on my lap. Her eyes blinked open, and they weren’t the usual dark blue color. They were now a warm golden color, and as they now gazed up at me, I could see a mixture of fear and shock in them. She took in a sharp breath and pushed herself up, zooming away from me. We were now ten meters away from each other.

*Skye's POV*

"Stay away from me!" My voice shook uncontrollably.
"Skye, I-" Jace started softly, but was cut off.
"How could you do this to me? I can’t believe this! After all this time, everything you did was just a lie! I can’t believe I even trusted you!"
I felt my eyes start to water.
"You did all this just so you could kill me," I whispered, my voice hoarse.
He was suddenly in front of me, gazing down at me with those light blue eyes. I took a step back, attempting to gain some more distance again, but instead, his hands wrapped around my shoulders, holding me in an iron grip.

"Let go of me," I gasped.
A pained expression appeared on his face.
"Killing you had been my task in the beginning," he confessed, his voice muted. "You were the hybrid that would cause all sorts of problems for the Council."
A shiver ran through me at the mention of the Council. I felt a tear roll down my cheek. I looked away from him. This was too much for me. I had developed all these feelings for him, and now it was as if they had all been crushed into a million pieces.

"But things are different now," he said quietly. "You were different from what I had expected. The more I got to know you, the stronger my feelings grew."
His right hand suddenly jerked my chin up, making me make eye contact with him.
"I fell in love with you, Skye."
