Chapter Twelve:
Noelle's POV

We watched TV for a while, until I was tired and Alex carried me to bed. I'd already got into my pajamas and Carl had let Alex borrow a pair of sweat pants. He set me down on the bed and laid down beside me. I slid under the blanket, slightly cold and he did as well, before pulling me close to him. He kissed me, and I smiled, pulling back and blinking a few times, before yawning. He laughed and I laid my head on his chest.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, smelling the mixed scents of him and Carl, from the sweatpants. I was almost asleep when I started remembering mom. I sat up quickly and Alex sat up immediately after. "Noelle?"

I turned to him and he hugged me. "It's okay babe. You're safe. You're completely, one hundred percent safe."

"I know, I know." I took a deep breath and we laid back down. I cuddled up as close to him as I could. He wrapped his arms around me tightly and kissed my cheek, and my jaw.

With him close to me, kissing me, I fell asleep into a long, thankfully dream-less sleep.
I woke up in the morning, refreshed and tangled up with Alex. I slid my arm out from under him and moved his hand from my hair, before sitting up and walking over to the closet. I was just about to grab a shirt when I someone came up behind me and kissed my cheek. I turned my head and smiled at Alex. "Good morning to you too." I laughed and turned to face him.

"How'd you sleep?" He asked, smiling sleepily at me.

"I slept great. Thanks to you. And you?"

"It was definitely one of the best night's of my life." He said, with the smile I loved so much.

"We should try to visit Alicia today." I said with a grin, and he nodded.

"Sounds good."

"Okay, well you should go to the living room so I can get dressed." I said with a small smile and he walked away after a quick kiss. I chose a pair of shorts and a blue t-shirt, not really in the mood to spend time on my appearance. I tossed my hair up in a messy bun and put on a little make up, less than usual, just eye liner and a little mascara. I looked in the mirror and although I wasn't completely satisfied with my look, I walked out of the room and into the kitchen.

My arm was killing me and I found the prescription pill bottle. I took the directed amount, one, and swallowed it with some water.

"You okay?" Alex asked, walking over to me and pulling me to him gently.

I nodded. "Mhm, my wrist just hurts a little." I shrugged as he lifted my arm up and kissed the gauze on my wrist. I smiled as his mouth trailed up my arm and then moved to my lips.

"I love you." He whispered, running his fingers through my hair.

I giggled and kissed him back. "I love you too."

Alex's POV
There was a knock on the door and Noelle walked over to it, pulling me along with me. She stood up on her toes to peek through the peek hole. Her face paled and she locked the door quickly before backing away from the door. "Noelle, who is it?" I asked, nervously. She sank down to the floor, shaking and I looked through the peek hole. It was her mom.

"Noelle, I know you're in there. I heard you lock the door." Her voice was muffled by the door, but it still caused Noelle to flinch. I walked over to her and scooped her up, carrying her to the couch where I sat down, holding her in my lap.

"Don't let her in Alex, please." Noelle whispered against my chest, looking down at her arm. She was wearing a short-sleeved tee and I knew she was staring at all the scars her mother had given her. Her eyes were watery and I kissed her forehead.

"I won't let her in. I promise. I promise." I slid her off my lap and kissed her forehead again as her mom pounded on the door. "I'll be right back." She stood up and hurried to her room, shutting the door behind her. I walked over to the door and looked out the peek hole again.

Noelle's mom was still standing there. "What do you want?" I called out, leaning against the wall beside the door, waiting for a reply.

"Who is that? Andrew?" She asked, and I remembered that Noelle's father's name is Andrew.

"No and it's not Carl either. I don't think it matters who I am, but you need to leave now." I told her, angrily.

"I'm not leaving until I talk to Noelle."

"I'll call the cops. You need to leave Noelle alone. Stop bugging her. You've already done enough damage to her."

"I need to see her. Now let me in!" She demanded, shoving on the door.

"No way. I'm not letting you in so you can hurt her more." I heard Noelle's door creak open and I looked over to see her standing in the doorway. I walked over to her and pulled her into a hug.

"What do you want?" Noelle shouted, walking over to the door, holding on to me.

"Who else would it be?" She wasn't shaking anymore but she was clutching on to my arm. "What do you want 'mom'? Are you tired of having no one to kick around? Or did you run out of money and hoped I could get some money from dad? Well either way, I don't care. I'm going to call the cops on you if you come around again. You need to leave me alone."

She stepped away from the door, a scared look in her eyes, as if she just realized she had defied her mother. "Sweetie, I never meant to hurt you. I care about you." Her mom spoke out, gently.

"Yeah right. And don't call me sweetie. You did mean to hurt you. You hurt me on purpose. Even when you weren't drunk you still hurt me, so you can't blame it on that! You don't care about me. You never have and I doubt you ever will. I hate you mom. I really, really hate you. And nothing can change that. I want you to leave. Now." She shoved on the door, angrily. "I hate you!" She turned away from the door and walked to the couch where she sat down, staring down at the floor.

We sat there in silence, until we decided that she had left. "We should try to go visit Alicia today." She said, suddenly, looking up at me.

"Sure." I stood up taking her hand and pulling her up too. We walked to the door and I opened it, stepping out ahead of her to make sure that her mom really was gone. She was, and we left. My parents were both working so we took a bus to the hospital.

When we got in, the nurse told us that Alicia would be going home today, but that she was in the hospital room still. So we walked down the hallways and into her room. She was sitting up, flipping through a coloring book, a bright pink crayon in her right hand.

"You came to visit me!" She grinned at us when she looked up and I hugged her, careful of the iv and her casts.

"Course we did." I smiled at her, happily. She looked at me and her grin grew.

"And you brought Noelle!" She reached over for a hug and Noelle stepped forward to hug her. "I missed you guys!" Alicia said as she pulled away from the hug with a grin so big I'm sure it was hurting her face.

"We missed you too Alicia." I ruffled her hair gently.

"I've been coloring." She told us, holding up her coloring book and showing us the pictures. "And there's mazes and stuff in here too." She flipped through some of the pages, showing us different things that she'd done.

We spent the rest of the afternoon in there with her, until her parents came to take her home. Her mom helped her change from the hospital clothes into some other clothes in the bathroom and she came out in the wheelchair. "I love you Alex." She said, reaching up to me.

My throat was choking up as I hugged her, tightly, missing her already. "I love you too Alicia. I love you." I gave her an extra tight squeeze before letting go and she smiled at me, her eyes glossy.

"Goodbye Noelle. I'm so glad I got to meet you." She said, reaching over for Noelle. Noelle hugged her again, and when she pulled back she had an almost sad smile on her face.

"I'm so glad I met you too, Alex told me a lot about you."

Alicia smiled brightly and waved goodbye as they left. We walked out of the hospital and towards the bus stop. It didn't take too long for us to get back, but when we did, we saw Noelle's mom going into the apartment. I sighed and pulled Noelle away.

"Let's go." I said, almost angrily.

Noelle's POV

We were getting close to the apartment when Alex suddenly sighed and turned around, pulling me with him. "Let's go." He sounded almost angry and I stopped walking.

"What's wrong?" I asked him, pulling my arm from his hand. "Tell me!"

"Your mom just went into the apartment. We're going to talk to the police. Let's go sit down over here and call the cops. Or something. Maybe that abuse hotline?"

"She doesn't abuse me anymore... Alex, she's my mom... I don't want her going to jail."

"I know you don't." He sighed. "But I don't want her bothering you anymore. At least see if we can get a restraining order against her."

Carl walked out of the apartment, with my mom behind him, shouting. He turned to her and yelled something, pointing for her to leave. She hollered something before turning and walking to her car, getting in and speeding off. I ran over to Carl. "What just happened?" I asked him, grabbing onto his arm as he started to leave.

"Your awful mom came pounding on the door, shouting for you. I told her to get out of here before I call the police. Noelle, get in the car, we've got to do something about her."

I backed away from him. "No! Yes, I hate her, but I don't want her going to jail."

"We've got to do something. Anything. She doesn't have to go to jail. We can get a restriction order. So she can't keep bugging us." Carl reached out for me and I sighed, before walking towards his car. Alex got in beside me and we drove to the closest court-house.

It didn't take long before we talked to some people and got a restraining order, so she couldn't come to close to me. I didn't understand it all, but Carl did and we finally got to leave.

Alex took my hand as we walked back to the apartment. He pulled me to the side of the apartment and took my other hand. He backed me up against the wall, holding my hands out by my head as he kissed me. "You know, I can't help but think what if I never met you."

"What if?" I asked, smiling and he nodded. "Well, why think what if? What if's don't matter anymore. Because we're both here, together, and I love you." I stood up on my tiptoes and he kissed me.

He let go of my hands and his hands tangled themselves in my hair by my neck and I slid my hands around his neck. His tongue swept across my lips and into my welcoming mouth. "I love you." He murmured in between kisses and my heart fluttered.

"I love you Alex." I whispered back as the sun started to set. "I love you.
